Jordi Cervello (1935-)

Concertino for Violin and String Orchestra

Jordi Cervello currently lives in Spain. His Concertino for Violin and String Orchestra is a piece that combines a fiery and impetuous virtuostic violin solo part. The first movement begins with an expressive, although brief, introduction. Then the fireworks begin as is heard in the opening theme of the solo violin. Initially the orchestra is a rhythmic homophonic backdrop for the solo. But the soloist takes over, playing a melody that is reminiscent of how Shostakovich might present a keen musical parody. The second movement showcases the violin solo with an intimate and hauntingly beautiful folk-like melody. The last movement begins with a thoughtful solo candeza and launches into a familiar theme from the first movement, this time presented in 3/4 meter. The theme is nearly a parody on itself. It is a brilliant and fresh work, which is an exciting addition to the violin concerti literature.
